Growth Mindset

We know that pupils who have a positive attitude towards their learning will make good progress and be successful.

Instilling a ‘growth mindset’ into our pupils has become one of our key priorities. We have introduced the theories of Dr Carol Dweck to staff and pupils and are determined to embed them within our school ethos.

We want all our pupils to relish challenges, embrace their mistakes as part of the learning process, value the importance of effort, respond carefully to feedback and take inspiration from others. This will help them to achieve, not only with us, but also in their future lives as adults.

What is Growth Mindset and why is it important?

A 'growth mindset' is the belief that abilities and skills can be developed through dedication and hard work. Research shows that people holding this view reach higher levels of success than people with fixed mindset beliefs, who do not think their abilities can change.

Teaching a growth mindset supports developing a love of learning and resilience which will last a lifetime. It increases self-esteem, motivation and productivity in the worlds of business, education and sports.

We encourage pupils to challenge themselves and see mistakes as a positive step in their learning journeys, developing their independence and resilience to become lifelong learners.

We encourage parents and carers to discuss this approach with children to help them see that mistakes are feedback and not failure: they provide a great opportunity and motivation for growth.
