Competitions

We believe that engaging in school competitions offers children the opportunity to extend their learning beyond the classroom. As well as being exciting events, competitions provide valuable learning experiences. They:

• Create a practical purpose to children’s learning and contextualise it
• Offer a friendly environment where children can learn how to win and lose respectfully and gracefully
• Help building confidence
• Teach children how to work within teams and develop a sense of camaraderie
• Improve children’s social skills
• Develop spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development values including: respect, fair play, resilience
• Test children against their peers and stimulates self-improvement.

Participating in competitions plays a crucial role in shaping a child's overall development and self-improvement. By actively engaging in these events, pupils have the opportunity to showcase their talents, learn from others, and grow both academically and socially.

Throughout the school year, we offer a variety of exciting opportunities to participate, from fun and inclusive school-based events like our active lunchtimes and annual sports day to local competitions that allow them to test their skills against students from other schools.

BPET competitions

As part of the Bellevue Place Education Trust, our school participates in numerous annual trust-wide competitions.

Themed competitions

• Top of the Rocks: Timetables Rockstars Competition for Year 4 pupils. The competition helps children practise the times tables, and prepares them for the national Multiplications Table Check.
• The Queen’s Gambit: Our very popular chess tournament which develops mathematical and concentration skills, resilience, cognitive function and patience. Facilitated by Chess in Schools and Communities.
• Debate Competition: The debate competition develops the skills of rebuttal (respectful and polite listening followed by constructive counter argument), confidence (expressed in tone of voice and body language) and explanation (the reasoning about their point of view on the topic at hand). Facilitated by Noisy Classroom.
• Poetry Recital Competition: Our poetry competition aims to celebrate the world of words and poetry, and the enjoyment of performing poetry to an audience. The competition encourages reading, exercising memory function and building confidence.

Sports Competitions

• Invictus Games: Key Stage 2 pupils low in confidence or special needs can take part in our inclusive Invictus Games, which let children experience boccia, new age kurling, dangerball and archery
• Football Tournament: boys and girls from Years 3-4 from all BPET schools
• Netball Stingers: pupils from Years 5-6 play a fast pace netball game
• Rounders Tournament: for all pupils in Key Stage 2
• Athletics Tournament.

Annual Sports Day

We recognise the exceptional sporting talent of some of our pupils. Sports Day provides children from Reception to Year 6 to partake competitively in a variety of athletics events including: sprinting, hurdles, long jump, high jump, javelin and relay. Parents are invited to see their children participate in individual and team events on the day.
