Geography Curriculum Map

Intent

Geography aims to inspire a curiosity and fascination in children about the world and its people, which will remain with them for the rest of their lives, equipping them well for further education. Our geography curriculum provides children with knowledge about our local environment, diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. The curriculum at enables children to develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas which will promote their moral, social and cultural development.

Implementation

Teaching and learning in Geography is developed through a skills based curriculum whereby children are encouraged to develop their geographical thinking by using a multitude of tools at their disposal such as: atlases, compasses, globes and maps to complete activities.

Our geographical progression of skills is organised into four main themes: geographic and skills fieldwork; location knowledge: human and physical; and place knowledge. Observing, analysing and comparing are incorporated into these sections and are assessed and evaluated through case and field studies within lessons. Children are given the opportunity to learn about different cultures and compare and contrast with their own. Through our curriculum, pupils learn to think critically and ask perceptive questions.

Impact

Our pupils develop as children that are resilient, inquisitive and curious about the world that surrounds them. We encourage children to go out and explore the world and ask thought provoking questions. We inspire the children to be environmentally conscious and to think about their carbon footprint and ways they can minimise it so they can enjoy a brighter future. Most importantly, they develop life skills such as compassion and respect for other cultures.
