History
Intent
We aim to stimulate children’s love and curiosity to allow them to develop a coherent and chronological understanding of Britain’s and the wider world's past. Throughout the primary curriculum, we teach children a deep understanding of chronology and the impact of different time periods on our society today.
History helps us to understand how the past has impacted the way we live today. It helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives through the achievements of significant individuals, civilisations and empires. Children learn about the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.
Implementation
Our curriculum is implemented through high quality teaching and engaging topics. The teaching of history lessons will be geared towards answering ‘The Big Question’. Learning in history is linked with other areas of the curriculum, for example literacy and art to enrich their knowledge and understanding.
We encourage our children to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments and develop perspective and judgement in order to develop the skills of enquiry, analysis, interpretation and problem solving. Children analyse and interpret primary and secondary sources of information and present their findings in a variety of ways and explore the relationship between different periods of time through a multitude of creative outlets which allows them to experience what it was like to live during that time. Children will explore different periods of time in history through the use of timelines and evaluate why key historic events occurred, through discussion and enquiry.
Impact
Historical study provides children with the opportunity to develop skills needed to become independent and resilient learners. Furthermore, it helps them to comprehend historical concepts and vocabulary and have an understanding of the events and people that have shaped the world that we live in today. They will develop skills such as problem solving, asking and answering questions, testing and evaluating hypotheses as well as developing an awareness of the importance on reflecting upon the past in order to inform the future.
