Physical Education (PE)

PE Curriculum Map

Intent

Our aim is to enthuse and inspire pupils to participate fully and develop a foundation for lifelong health and wellbeing, with the goal that children develop a love of physical activity and sport. We aim to ensure that all children leave primary school leading active and healthy lifestyles and with the capability to be successful in their sporting challenges. We intend to provide children with a range of experiences that cater to the children’s wants and needs.

Implementation

Our Physical Education curriculum develops our pupils' physical competence and confidence, leading to participation in sports and activities throughout childhood and beyond. Our curriculum has carefully been designed to provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident within all areas including dance, gymnastics, athletics, games, swimming and outdoor adventurous activities through a broad and balanced curriculum.

Each class has two hours of PE per week: one indoor and one outdoor session. Our lessons are planned using Get Set 4 PE resources which align with our core values, our whole child approach and the objectives laid out in the National Curriculum. Get Set 4 PE is structured so that progression is built into the scheme which ensures our children are increasingly challenged as they move up through the school.

We are lucky to have Coach Jack at Whitehall Park who, through a coaching model, improves our PE provision with his subject knowledge and helps professional development. Coach Jack also organises active lunchtimes to help increase the physical activity levels of children in the school. In recent years, we have also achieved our Healthy Schools London Gold Award

Competitions

We believe in the importance of competitive sport. In recognition of this, we look to enter as many local and national competitions as we are able to. Within such events, children develop SMSC values including respect, fair play, resilience, team work and an appreciation for international differences in physical activities.

Sports Days

We recognise the exceptional sporting talent of some of our pupils. Sports Day provides children from Reception to Year 6 to partake competitively in a variety of athletics events including: sprinting, hurdles, long jump, high jump, javelin and relay. Parents are invited to see their children participate in individual and team events on the day.

Impact

We ensure that our PE curriculum is progressive and allows children to develop fundamental skills and apply them to a variety of sports and activities. All children are provided with the opportunities to develop skills and to achieve their personal best. We encourage our pupils to be physically active and this has positive implications on their learning in the classroom. Children understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of exercise.

School Games Mark

This reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. Participating in this process allows schools to evaluate their PE provision and assists them in developing an action plan for future progress.
