Residential trip to Florence, Italy

Our Year 6 pupils were given a once in a lifetime opportunity to visit world-renowned art galleries and experience Italian culture on a trip to Florence. This extraordinary experience was funded by the government’s Turing Scheme.

During their five day grand tour, the pupils visited the Uffizi Gallery and the Galleria dell' Accademia; they came face-to-face with masterpieces by Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci and Botticelli. They also went to the Museo Galileo and appreciated astronomical artifacts dating as far back as the 16th century.

The group explored Florence visiting restaurants, gelaterias and souvenir shops. They viewed architectural marvels like the Duomo Cathedral, Ponte Vecchio and Piazza della Signoria; they also adventured further afield to Pisa to see the famous Leaning Tower.

One day was spent on Viareggio beach, a train journey away from Florence, which left a lasting impact on the children. A pupil said: “We had an exciting day at Viareggio beach. The water was very clear and we could see jellyfish, but the best part was splashing the teachers! As we were all changing, we saw the cutest bunny on a lead which was called Lewis.”

Much to the children’s excitement, on their last day they visited Florence’s most famous gelateria: Gelateria dei Neri. Pupils used their allowance and learnt how to budget for more than one ice cream, and learnt about exchange rates.

The trip allowed children to learn about artistic techniques and styles, and offered them a chance to experience new food, customs and the traditions of Italy; they returned home with unique lifelong memories, an improved independence, and a newfound love for gelato!

Educational trips and residentials provide unique opportunities to learn outside the classroom, develop important life skills, and are a vital part of a child's learning experience. We know that some children had never been on a plane or on a beach, and we are delighted to have been able to offer this opportunity to them.
